The floating bridge or chain ferry operated from May 4th 1840 to 1959. It was constructed in Bristol and transported via canals and sea in three sections then assembled at Gosport. These can be seen each side and the centre containing two steam engines to power the shaft with the mortice wheels which engaged the two chains which were laid across the harbour. In the background the waterfront of Gosport is visible. The main grey building is the Market House which was badly damaged by bombing in World War 2 leaving just the ground floor and basement intact. All of the buildings are long gone but the ferry gardens built in 1924 remain.
