"The Great Fire of Gosport" in 1910. Camper & Nicholson's went up in smoke on 23rd December. The fire was extensive as can be seen by the accompanying image from Gosport A Pictorial History by Ian Edelman. Also shown is an image of the only remaining Gosport building (the Crown Inn/hotel) from those shown in North Street on the painting. The fire station with its look out tower was located on the corner of North Street and Clarence Road. It was demolished in 1953. Steam driven fire pumps are shown heading towards the fire along North Street. It is interesting to see many shops and pubs along this once busy street. One shop that remained for a long period was Murphys. It is shown on the corner on the left side half way down the street with a red frontage.
