Mudlarks shouting for coins to be thrown down to them in the mud by the Sailors on the outbound Portsmouth Dockyard train which is travelling on the railway viaduct (demolished in the 1960s) to join the existing Harbour Station rail lines. The people in the foreground are standing on part of the station area that still exists. The joining of the railway viaduct required the Station/Gosport Ferry area to be shaped accordingly. Some may recall the iron railings shown here as they were only removed when the concrete bridge to the Hard was built to replace the old metal one. Mudlarks were youngsters who would get very muddy in the harbour at low tide and shout at anyone passing above for coins to the thrown down to them. The last Mudlarks I recall seeing were in the 1960s. It was a regular feature in this area in the early to mid’ 1900s and many local residents will recall scene of Mudlarks. The battleship is HMS Dreadnought. HMS Victory is afloat off the Gosport Shoreline and the Gosport to Portsmouth ferry can be seen on the left. Today, HMS Warrior would dominate this scene. Records show that there was a structure in the location of the Kiosk at the time of this scene which is circa. 1912.
