This was one of the main embarkation points for the 1944 invasion of France (D Day) in World War 2. The scene shows the 13th18th hussars loading their tanks onto a tank landing craft. German prisoners of war are being disembarked from another tank landing craft which has returned from France. The slipway was constructed using rubble from bombed buildings in Portsmouth. This was transported via the floating bridge at Gosport waterfront. Some of the concrete flooring slabs commonly known as “chocolate blocks” are still there today in their original positions. The Tudor framed building was the White Feather pub at the time and was requisitioned as the centre of operations for this embarkation area. The ambulance shown in the front drive of Hardway House indicated how this was used as a temporary mortuary for returning casualties who did not survive the journey back from France.
