Forton Prison and detention Centre c.1920. Constructed 1850. The key points that remain today are The Junction Tavern at the lower left, the houses opposite and two houses across the railway line. There are other houses remaining. The key aspects are the large tower in the centre of the prison which was for ventilation. Interesting to note that there was a sawmill where the Sanderson’s factory was to be built. Also, a Jacob's ladder (footbridge over the railway line) existed. The football match on the left is taking place in the prisoner's exercise area. The Trades Club building was originally the prison gymnasium. One corner of the prison remains today which can be seen in the car park on Forton Road. Leesland railway crossing is in operation.
