The main entrance to the Floating Bridge (Chain Ferry) at this time was of a quite distinctive design which was matched at the Old Portsmouth terminal across the harbour. Here passengers and horse drawn vehicles are disembarking from the Floating Bridge “Duchess of York”. HMS St Vincent is in the background. The horse drawn tram awaits customers on the Hard. The Isle of Wight Hoy pub (demolished in the early 1960s) is open for business. This view is similar to some contemporary photographs that were taken from the balcony of the Market House but viewed from a slightly different angle and a more panoramic view. Apart from the Round Tower and Cathedral in the Portsmouth skyline, the key feature still there today in the same location is the Gambier drinking fountain (installed 1870) which is partially visible at the base of the painting.
