There was a fair held in this location for many years. It is shown here 1906. There were many complaints about the rowdy behaviour at this fair and as such it was moved to a new (and current) location at The Horsefield (to be renamed Walpole Park) when the fair came to town. HMS St Vincent can be seen in the harbour at the upper right. The Black Lion pub in North Street is just visible at the lower left. The Waterman’s Arms pub with the red frontage is shown above the fair. The dominant Market House is evident. The building to the upper left contain The Castle pub which is still there and is the only survivor in the entire scene. This location of The Green is today a car park.
