June 1944 embarkation area at Beach Street, Gosport, which was in the area now occupied by the tower blocks at Gosport waterfront. The single pontoon, which had four Dolphins (the four posted concrete lined structures in the water straddled by walkways) sits between two Mark 3 LCTs (Landing Craft Tank). The foremost one is that which is now on display outside the D Day museum in Southsea. The hard standing (chocolate block) paving is identical to that at Stokes Bay and Hardway. Sherman (Mark 4) tanks with wading funnels (the large outlets attached to the tank to enable them to operate in water close to the beach) are being loaded onto the landing craft having travelled along North Street. Parked outside the Castle tavern is a troop of Buffalo amphibious armoured vehicles on their trailers and prime movers. This is shown in some of the well -known photos of the time. An LST (Landing ship Tank) can be seen heading out to the Solent just above Camper & Nicholsons Ltd. This has embarked from Hardway. The barrage balloons (these suspended wires to obstruct low flying aircraft) were commonly raised ahead of the crossing to France. Here, three are visible. The one in the foreground is attached to HLcT7074 and two in the background. One of these is attached to the LST and the other, just above Clarence Yard is actually attached to another LST moored at Hardway. Structures still in existence today are, Camper & Nicholsons Ltd, The Castle Pub, Clarence Yard, the forts on Portsdown Hill and of course, the Ferry Gardens. Notable structures that are long gone include, St Matthews Church (to the lower left of the large barrage balloon), The Isle of Wight Hoy pub, The Market House (in its bombed out state), the ferry ticket offices and the chain ferry, in this instance under maintenance and up on wooden pillars. The grey building in the foreground by the LCTs was the Coastguard House. This was the control centre for this embarkation area
